Being pregnant, although joyous, has its challenges. Of course there’s the physical challenges and symptoms, but also the difficulties in travel. You need to pack additional care essentials, you need to bring comfortable clothes to accommodate your altered figure, and you need to take the environment to which you’re going very much into consideration. But not all is lost and us ladies don’t need to stay home for 9 months! The revolutionary Babymoon trip, a new branch of tourism focusing on pregnant couples with laid back, more relaxing excursions and experiences are adding a fun new element to the pre-journey of becoming parents. When planning a Babymoon, you need to ensure that you take the woman’s health and physical ability seriously when putting together your itinerary. When we headed to Nova Scotia for our special vacation, we planned a few day trips, reserved upscale restaurants that could cater to the finicky pregnancy diet, and allowed for ample rest. This tour of Lunenburg and Mahone bay offered by Ambassatours in particular was a highlight and perfect for a pregnant couple. In fact, we seriously feel it belongs on all Babymoon and other planned trips to Nova Scotia.

Why This Tour is Ideal for Pregnant Couples

  • The tour is taken on a coach bus with very comfortable seating. Seats have great back support and are roomy for growing bellies.
  • There is a washroom on the bus! If you are babymooning at 6-7 months (flying after this isn’t really ideal) than you may need to take advantage of this perk on the bus.
  • The walking tour in Lunenburg, although an hour, is TOTALLY doable. I did not have a problem at all and it was very easy going with down hill all the way. If you are having trouble or are growing larger quicker, you can also opt for the Fishery museum instead. This is a great option if you aren’t able to walk much.
  • The tour although all day, has many stops to stretch your legs. You aren’t cooped up in the bus for very long driving hours.
  • The tour doesn’t involve anything vigorous like hiking or adrenaline activities.
  • You can enjoy snacks and drinks on the bus. There are no restrictions so you can be assured if you need a snack or thirsty as hell like me, you won’t be denied the privilege.
  • The ride back is quiet allowing you to rest your eyes should you need 40 winks. I took advantage of this during the hour back to Halifax as I was quite tired.

About Ambassatours and Their Inclusion in Trips to Nova Scotia

I was thrilled to have taken this tour with Ambassatours. They definitely are veterans of Nova Scotia tourism, clad in Scottish kilts and totally up and up with the history and happenings of the province. Here are the logistics to book this or one of their other amazing tours as part of your many trips to Nova Scotia.

  • You can book your tour online or take a gamble at the welcome centre at the Halifax Harbour that there is availability.
  • The tours depart from Halifax at the harbour area.
  • Not only does Ambassatours offer day trips to Lunenburg and Mahone Bay, but they also offer excursions to Peggy’s Cove, hop on hop off tours around Halifax, boat tours, specialized niche experiences as culinary and historical tours, and much more.
  • The tours are exceptional with knowledgeable staff. Heck, they’ve been perfecting the experiences they offer since 1994.

The Lunenburg Part of the Tour

Lunenburg is approximately an hour away from Halifax. During the drive, the knowledgeable driver will provide interesting commentary about Halifax and point out spots along the way. Upon arrival, you will be asked your preference of the walking tour with the guide or a visit to the fishery museum. In our case, the entire bus chose the walking tour over the museum visit. The tour as mentioned, is downhill all the way and includes photo stops, history, quirks about the town, and a stop in a super cool church.

The Wedding Cake House

Along the walking tour you will notice the beautiful coloured houses and structures. This is symbolic of the fishing towns within the Maritimes and is definitely highlighted here in Lunenburg. This house, nicknamed the Wedding Cake House, definitely lives up to the architectural design of the village. This home painted pink clearly resembles the famous dessert couples share during their wedding reception doesn’t it?

The Lunenburg Academy of Music and Performance

As you continue on the walking tour, you will also enjoy the picturesque Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance. Initially a school, this beautiful landmark within Lunenburg is conversation piece and an impressive Unesco Heritage Site within Nova Scotia. Nowadays performances take place here, but no formal schooling or other curricula take place in this building. It is a beautiful backdrop for weddings and for other occasions within Lunenburg! Be sure to take lots of pictures here for your babymoon album!

The Lunenburg Anglican Church

This church truly has a story. A beautiful structure, this church was rebuilt after a tragic fire less than a decade ago. The most incredible part is that the locals fund-raised the majority the cost within their community to rebuild the beloved parish. On the tour, you are brought inside this gorgeous house of worship and given a brief talk on the rebuilding of it and the various elements that have made it all the more special in its modern appearance. While here, check out the beautiful lit ceilings, the stained glass windows, the massive bible encased in glass, and the roped off pew for royals should they ever come to visit.

The Fish Shack

After the wonderful walking tour detailing superstitions, history, and other fun facts, you are given time to grab some serious grub. Your guide will have a wealth of suggestions and information on how to spend your leisure time here and I cannot agree more with his lunch recommendations. Guys, there’s a Subway here, but just don’t do it! Try a local seafood spot that prides itself on amazing lobster rolls, oysters, fish and chips, or other delightful dish. We headed to the Fish Shack and oh my god, they made one of the best lobster buns I’ve ever eaten. It was freshly caught lobster, commercial mayo (preggy ladies, this is HUGE as if it were homemade mayo, we wouldn’t be able to enjoy this mouthwatering treat!) herbs, and green onions. It was quite large and came with a decent helping of French Fries. Satisfying and quick! This restaurant serves you fast so you can enjoy some time browsing the shops and taking photos of the colourful and historic village.

The Local Shops

A great reason to choose a faster serving restaurant is so you have the opportunity to browse the local shops in the village. Grab some local souvenirs and crafts made by the Lunenburg residents and other nearby cities and enjoy reminiscing of your time spent here. We loved the Canadiana offered here and bought a few magnets and other trinkets.

Notable Landmarks to See in Lunenburg and Include in all Trips to Nova Scotia

Along with delicious food, colourful houses, and great shops, in Lunenburg there are also some iconic landmarks that you should check out while there. Here are two that stand out and have put Lunenburg on the map in the Canadian Maritimes.

The Bluenose

So if you look closely at the Canadian 10-cent coin, you will notice a stately looking ship. This is the Bluenose. This famous vessel docks here and travels around Canada. When we were there, sadly it was not at home and instead, in Toronto! Ironic. Learn more about this boat in the shop dedicated to its legacy and history and perhaps take home a souvenir replica. In our case, we brought home a magnet and fun pair of socks.

Fisherman Memorial

Right near the harbour make sure you pay your respects to all the lost fishermen over the years. As fishing is one of the most popular and prevalent careers here in Lunenburg, you can only imagine how many seamen and women have lost their lives in terrible weather attempting to bring home a fresh catch. This monument is essential to check out on all trips to Nova Scotia to get a true appreciation for the fresh seafood served all over the village and province and respect a profession that takes years to perfect.

The Mahone Bay Part of the Tour

After exploring Lunenburg and enjoying a delicious lunch, the tour brings you to the delightful little village of Mahone Bay. A definite essential for all trips to Nova Scotia, Mahone Bay brings charm, colour, and Canadian culture to all visitors. Smaller than Lunenburg, Mahone Bay brings its own appeal with local shops, cafes, seafood eateries, and colourful vistas. On the tour you are given approximately an hour to explore. If you didn’t have lunch in Lunenburg, there are options here should you feel peckish.

The Local Shops of Mahone Bay

So there are some really cute spots to check out here in Mahone Bay. Two of our favourite shops were the Tummy Mummy Baby Boutique and the Amos Pewter store.

Buy some locally made Pewter at Amos Pewter

Head into this store and watch the locals at their craft! See demonstrations of how the beautiful pewter products are made and perhaps purchase a thing or two for yourself or for a gift. We loved the products so much that we bought a Tooth Fairy Box for our unborn daughter.

Tummy Mummy Baby Boutique

So of course when you’re on a Babymoon, you have the unborn on your mind and see temptation of souvenir onesies and other things all over the place. If you want to give in to this urge, head to Tummy Mummy while in Mahone Bay. They have some very sweet clothes and educational toys. Plus, their presentation and colourful home is worthy of a few photos!

Grab a Coffee at the Barn

We love local coffee shops. We love them so much that we seek them out when we travel. Exploring Mahone Bay, the locals gave us a wonderful recommendation on where to get a coffee and relax until heading back on tour – The Barn.

The Barn is a local favourite that boasts barista-crafted coffee beverages along with iced fraps, teas, and many other options. Try a baked good along with your drink for the perfect marriage. Enjoy a welcoming atmosphere with your travel buddies, or pick up one of the many books on offer to enjoy some quiet time.
